• House Fly in Focus

This image was made by stacking and aligning 18 individual photographs in Photoshop CS5. Each individual photograph was focused at focus planes about 0.25 mm apart. This method produces macro images with large depth of focus.

Notice that the tip of the wings closer to the camera and the claws on the feet farther from the camera are both in focus.

 • Asian Lady Beetle (aka; ladybug, ladybird beetle, ladyclock, lady cow, lady fly). Wandering around a window pane on a rainy day.

The nine-spotted ladybird beetle is indigenous to the United States and Europe and is generally considered to be helpful in controlling garden aphids. The larger, multi-spotted Asian lady beetle shown here was introduced to the United States in 1988. It is a voracious eater and can out compete their smaller kindred for food.

These ladybugs are admired more for their colorful shells than their noxious odor and the yellow stain they produce when they are handled. A vacuum cleaner is a nice removal tool. Their little claws on their feet can also be felt when they crawl on the back of your neck; making it hard to resist the urge to smack them!
• Untitled photo
 • Macro-photograph of a female mosquito. The two widely spread appendages are antennae. The central appendage is the proboscis.

The proboscis contains six parts: two pairs of sharp, flexible cutters (serrated "blades" and sharp tipped "knives") surrounding a pair of fine tubes - one for sucking up blood, the other for dripping an anticoagulant into the wound that keeps the blood flowing.
